Rwanda Receives Refugees Evacuated from Libya Under UN-Backed Humanitarian Program | Talented Migrants

Refugees arrive in Rwanda after being evacuated from Libya

Rwanda has recently welcomed 91 refugees and asylum seekers evacuated from Libya, under a humanitarian initiative supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the African Union, and the European Union. The group arriving in Kigali included a diverse mix of nationalities, with 38 Sudanese, 33 Eritreans, 11 Somalis, 7 Ethiopians and 2 South Sudanese among those relocated.

This relocation is part of the Emergency Transit Mechanism (ETM) — a program designed to evacuate vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers from detention centers in Libya and provide them with temporary refuge in Rwanda. Since its inception in 2019, the initiative has helped relocate over 2,150 individuals to safety through coordinated international efforts.

Rwanda’s ongoing participation in the ETM underscores its role in offering humanitarian support and life-saving protection to displaced people facing hardship in Libya, as global partners seek long-term solutions for those in need.
